Glucose or Diarrhea Check for Puppies

Coloured decorator icing

Place pea sized drop on tongue and check puppy 1/2 to one hour later. If coloured poop is present then the puppy has diarrhea.

What can you do then?

Fill a very small plastic container with the following:

10 ml of extra virgin Olive Oil
30 drops of Orageno Oil

Depending on size of puppy, give approximately 1 ml per 3 lbs of the mixture by syringe directly into the puppy's mouth at least twice per day for 3 days minimum.  Your puppy will smell like a pizza parlour but the diarrhea should disappear. Feed as you normally would during this time.

If there is vomiting in addition to dirrehea, get to a vet immediately!!

 Sweet Potatoe & Chicken

When your dog has an upset stomach, diarrhea or just not interested in eating, it’s important to ensure your dog doesn’t stop eating. It has been my experience that a Havanese will actually become anorexic and by the time you have actually noticed the dog has lost too much weight, it can be too late. Yes, a Havanese will starve itself. This recipe is very palatable to the dog not feeling well or with diarrhea.

Ingredients
1 chicken breast (raw and deboned)
1 cup water
½ cup sweet potatoe (can be substitued for rice)
Cut the chicken into several small cubes ensuring there is absolutely no bone anywhere. Place chicken and water together in medium pot and bring to boil on high. Cook separately the sweet potatoe. Once both are cooked fully, mash/blend them together and feed cool.
Should you prefer to use rice then once the chicken has started to boil, reduce heat to medium and add rice. Cover with lid and cook the chicken with rice at the time suggested by directions on rice. Cool before feeding.

Generally small, frequent meals are best to bring a dog back to health. After a couple of days, start introducing the regular kibble.

Note: Diarrhea is very serious for animals and must not be taken lightly. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop following the first feeding or two of chicken with rice, ensure there are not other problems by taking your dog to the vet!

Liver Water

Liver is well known for its nutritional ingredients for people as well as canines. I have successfully used liver water to ail a senior dog through a hard time, as well as prevent a puppy from going hypo-glycemic although I do not recommend this in place of veterinary care and/or IV.

All you need is some beef liver from the grocery store and a pot of water. After placing the liver in the water, bring to a boil. Be careful that the mixture doesn’t boil over. Simmer on low for about 20 minutes. Cool the water and refrigerate. Offer as needed.

With the remaining liver, chop into small pieces to offer small amounts as treats or with the kibble to stimulate appetite.

CAUTION: There has been much discussion about some Havanese with elevated liver enzymes. Many breeders believe that feeding liver treats may contribute to the elevation of the ALT's & ALP's. Do NOT feed liver to your Havanese if your dog won't eat their daily meals or has other health problems.

Satin Balls

Sometimes a dog’s metabolism keeps it always on the thin side, or it just doesn’t seem to keep weight on. Again, I can’t stress enough the importance to keep the dog fed with regularly scheduled meals or it may start eating things that will endanger their life such as feces. With the following recipe you can usually stimulate a poor appetite or help that dog who doesn’t keep weight on.

You can find several recipes on the Internet and mine is actually an adaptation of several. Most posted recipes suggest feed the Satin Balls raw, however I prefer to lightly bake mine. The choice is yours but I caution to research the merits and concerns on feeding raw diets to canines. There are also people who suggest that the Satin Balls are nutritionally complete and can be fed in place of prepared dog foods. Again I caution against this practice and prefer to feed only 1 or 2 or my balls a day as needed, and use it as a treat for working.

Ingredients
1 pound of hamburger (raw regular grind)
1 pkg (8 oz) of plain cream cheese
1 cup quick oats (soaked in heavy cream)
½ jar all natural smooth peanut butter
1 cup wheat germ
¼ cup flax meal
2 Tblsps molasses
6 raw eggs
Mix all the ingredients together.  Shape into small 1” balls or drop by teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Cool and freeze.

Concentrated Liver Water (for use in Puppy Formula)

Liver and 2 cups of water in a pot. Boil down until the liver is well cooked and there is only about 1 cup of water left.
Strain and freeze in ice cube trays

Puppy formula

Occasionally it has been necessary to prepare a formula for the puppy that isn’t getting enough of mother’s milk or a very sick puppy. This is not my recipe but one that I have used with great success. This should not be used by the average pet home but is intended more for breeders who need to assist a new mother, orphaned pup, or failing pup. It’s high in calories and should be fed every 3 -4 hr's...24 hr's a day,

Myra Savant Harris’ latest greatest puppy milk replacement:
1/3 cup concentrated liver water (or substitute canned low sodium beef broth)
1 can evaporated (not sweetened) milk
1 cup whole/high fat live culture yogurt
2 raw egg yolks
1 T. mayo or canola oil
1 teaspoon corn syrup (any colour)
1 teaspoon baby vitamins
Place all in blender and blend until completely mixed. Pour formula into ice cube trays and freeze. When the cubes are frozen, place in heavy weight freezer bags. At each feeding, take enough cubes to make a feeding, place them into a plastic bag (snack size Ziplocs) and warm to approx. 95/96 degrees (luke warm). … 10 to 12 calories per cc!! … NO diarrhea or constipation with this formula …

Mother's Pudding

1 small package sugar free vanilla  pudding
1/2 cup sugar
4 cups milk
4 egg yolks

Bring to a boil and then cool. Feed to bitch.
