The Coastal Escape Litter
Born Jan 8, 2012
I had been thinking and searching for the right male for Raine for several months. Not always an easy task. It's important to find the right male to compliment and improve some of Raine's traits. I knew that I wanted to have some Cuban Havanese bloodlines included as we were so thrilled with the Silk/Cuban cross puppies of our 2011 Hawaiian Elements Litter. When we met Itoh, we instantly knew he was the one! Itoh, or PIXC Itoh El Rey De La Casa (or lord of the manor/castle), is a Cuban/Silk cross and has the gorgeous, correct coat, the incredible structure, temperament...well... the whole package! He lives in a companion home in Calgary with a wonderful retired couple. There aren't many opportunities to breed to this special little boy and we feel very blessed to present our little Raine to him. These pups will be very special indeed!.
We chose to give this litter the 'Coastal Escape' theme as fall of 2011 found husband Daryl and I attending the Lower Mainland Fanciers dog show held in Abbotsford, BC. Since we hadn't been to the coast in over 20 years, we decided it would be nice to spend some extra time touring the area and visiting friends. We had a wonderful time!! Each of the pups will carry a registered name to reflect locations or events while at the coast.
We took only one dog with us, Seda N Pixc Island Phoenix, to the show and after a very successful weekend, he went home with friends Kim & Brad and their lovely female, Lia. My boys, Spenser & Cane, went to Adora Kennels just outside of Lacombe where Don & Trish spoiled them. Raine & Jenga went to Chris of Pixc Havanese who I knew would give them the absolute best care!!
I knew that Raine would come into season while we were gone, so Chris and I kept in close contact with anticipation. When I arrived home on the 4th of November, we made arrangements to pick up Itoh from his home and make a trip to the vet. On November 9th, Raine & Itoh were bred using side-by-side AI.

Elements in Hawaiian Tradition
Born March 30, 2011
Every winter we start planning and preparing for a spring litter. Late in 2010 our thoughts turned to Jenga and finding a complimentary match. Although we have had lovely puppies from our own Spenser, we were looking for ever better. Chris from www.pixchavanese.com, brought into Canada a gorgeous Cuban male with original lines, fabulous structure, temperament and more. 'Cayo' had already sired two other litters that exceeded breed standards and Chris agreed to allow me the opportunity use his stud services.
This was an exceptional litter of five stunning puppies blending our favored two types of the Havanese. The Theme for this litter was 'The Elements' in Hawaiian Tradition.

The Sire - Oye Chico Bola De Nieve 'Cayo'
Cayo was imported from Cuba in 2009 graciously from Blanchy Guerra-Lopez and Guido Serrano's kennel to Chris of Pixc Havanese . His sire is the International Champion, Oye Chico Ebano from Cubanitas, also known as Chevere. This is a very old line of Havanese which include 'Puppy' who graced the Cuban stamp.
Cayo has been thoroughly health tested and received passing certification in all including Hips, Elbows, Patellas, CERF and BAER. He has already sired some exceptional litters in Western Canada belonging to Pixc Havanese and Cameron Havanese. Bringing the original Cuban line into the Havana Silk line produces stunning puppies for the show ring, competition arena's or family home.
We also tried something new with this litter and created their own blog for adopting families and Seda Havanese fans to watch the puppies develop and grow. Check out the blog to see pictures and video of the Elements litter.
The Luck 'o the Irish
Born May 25, 2010
Before I left on my trip to spend time with my cousins and enjoy St Patricks Day in Ireland, I made all the necessary arrangements to ensure my boys had no contact with my girls. After 10 wonderful days and just the day before my return, my husband picked up the boys to bring them home. In true Irish humor, nature took control and in the blink of an eye we had an oops. For this reason we named this litter the 'Luck 'o the Irish.'
The Dam
Seda's Sweet Summer Raine - "Raine"
Standing at just 9 1/2 inches at the shoulder and weighing about 8 pounds, Raine may be on the smaller end of the scale for breed standard but she is not delicate in personality or activity. She was born on July 6th, 2009, is CKC registered and has a very soft and silky coat. She passed her BAER and CERF tests as well as her preliminary OFA certifying Hips, Elbows and Patella's. She has a wonderful and endearing temperament that she passed on to her offspring. As a young mother, she was absolutely amazing and her babies were very happy, healthy and stunning babies.

The arrival of our Irish blessings.
I came home on the 25th of May for lunch as I did everyday but the dogs didn't come to the door as they normally would. I went to check on Raine who I kept in the whelping room where she had been spending the last few days and nights n preparation. Indeed when I checked in on her she had already delivered her first pup. A gorgeous black and tan girl. Her temporary name was Miss Molly Malone named after the infamous Miss Molly Malone of Dublin Ireland.

The next baby was breech and a struggle for poor Raine. Born was a large male pup and we luckily had oxygen available as he needed the extra life giving air. A few days after he was born, this dark pup started to show gold hairs dispersed throughout his coat, hence he was giving the name 'Guinness' after the Irish dark ale.

The first time outside for these month old pups.
Guinness LOVED everything about being outside! |
Molly also enjoyed the tickle of grass on her feet but didn't want to stray far from me. |
On the other hand, Trinity didn't like the outside and was content to stay on the familiar solid object. |
At approximately a month old we added some baby agility equipment into their play area. They had so much fun running through the tunnels and climbing over the boards.

The pups all went to wonderful homes in August 2010. We are blessed to have such wonderful people adopting our babies into their homes.

CH Sunberry Pixc Spenser For Hire - "Spenser"

Spenser was born on April 7th, 2006 to breeder Grace of Sunberry Kennels. He is registered with the CKC and won some group placings on his way to receiving his CKC Conformation title. Spenser is on the smaller end of the breed standard as he is 9 1/2 inches at the shoulder and averages about 8 lbs. He has passed all his health tests including CERF, Hips, Patellas and Elbows. It was only recently discovered his BAER test was never done so now that he is in our care, we'll be testing his hearing in the summer of 2011. He also has an incredible soft, silky coat that he throws to all his offspring. Spenser has a lovely and gentle personality that attracts people to him which makes him perfect as a Therapy dog. Spenser loves to play outside, chase birds, hiding his favorite toys and tease the other dogs by guarding his treats instead of eating them right away. He sired other litters before joining our home. Due to Spenser's gentle and caring nature, when puppies are ready to meet other dogs, Spenser is the first.
THE STORM LITTER
Jenga started labour late on July 5th during one of the seasons worst thunder showers, hence the theme for this litter. Two pups were lost due to birthing complications, however the remaining four puppies were active, happy and healthy.
First born shortly after midnight was "Arcus" which is 'a low cloud formation preceding a thunderstorm'.
"Cane" was second born while at the vet's and during the worst of the storm in the wee hours of the 6th.
""Raine" was the only girl who arrived shortly after Cane but delivered safely back at home.
Last to arrive was "Chase" who made his appearance as the storm blew over and the sun peeked it's way to start the new day.

At 5 weeks of age they were spending lots of time in the kitchen with me. |
Not their first bath but the first time I had someone to help take pictures :-) When we bath the puppies we are careful not to stress them more than necessary and dry them quickly with a blow dyer on low heat. We also get the babies used to gently getting their ears and eyes cleaned during bath time. Even the puppies love to feel clean and smell wonderful following their bath.

By September Arcus & Chase went to their forever homes. We were very blessed to have their new homes within 20 minutes from us so over the years we have had opportunities to see them many times. We kept Cane as our potential show dog and Raine as a potential addition to a breeding program.
UPDATE: Both Cane and Raine were very successful in the show ring. Follow the link to our website to learn more about Cane and Raine
